The collective is stronger than the individual…so suggests The Borg.
A couple of years ago a large “old media” executive asked Mark Zuckerberg, “How can I build a giant network like you have done?” Zuckerberg’s answer, “You can’t.”
Zuckerberg correctly observed that groups, or Tribes as Seth Godin calls them, already exist. What he provided was a place to gather, he gave them “elegant organization”.
Twitter was not designed to be a global news and information source. Take a look at their homepage. It used to say, “What are you doing?” It grew because it was opened up to the community. Hashtags, @ replies…created by the users.
Imagine what the entire planet could do with your data if you gave it away. Probably a lot more than a handful of engineers in San Francisco, and certainly more than a few old media executives trying to trick users to stay in their walled gardens.
