I’ve written before about ABC and the move to make programming available outside of the affiliate model.
For those who might have not worried about things like the ABC app on the iPad, take a look the D9 interview with Bob Iger. Iger is not afraid to make bold moves with regard to old and new media. A few years ago he saw no growth in traditional radio and sold off the Disney stations. The D9 interview shows that Iger is moving toward wider distribution of ABC programming, away from the affiliates.
It is an interesting time for ABC affiliates. Programming is available on the iPad, and many ABC stations carried Oprah. With the network looking to distribute programs elsewhere, the late newscasts should suffer. Local morning news has been seen by some as a hope for the future. One wonders how long it will be before Good Morning America is streamed over the Internet.
