One of the smartest newsmen I’ve known was a guy named John Lee. Years ago I watched John fight hard to preserve journalism in a newsroom that suffered under a management team that was more than a little misguided.
John was the first person I ever remember hearing say, “Are we going to give people what they are talking about, or are we going to give them what they need to know.”
So, it was with interest that I read this article today about another newspaper that was leaving the print model in favor of digital. This line jumped out:
“We’re shifting to this idea of what does the reader want, not what do we think the reader needs, which has been the journalism philosophy for years,”
I’m pretty sure John left the business some years ago.
