We had a great conversation today on the first installment of the Weather Insiders series. Sarah Hill was our featured guest. Sarah was the first to use Google Hangouts to give people a behind-the-scenes look at a live newscast, while also being able to interact with the program in real time.
One of the things Sarah talked about was the benefit she got from being one of the first people to take advantage of Google Hangouts and Hangouts On Air (Sarah has 2.7 million followers). I’ve been reading an old advertising book that suggests that often times being first is better than being best.
When you “start” you get to practice, and learn, and get better. I was stunned recently to hear from someone who deals with broadcast companies that some of them consider themselves “fast followers”. They watch others do the testing and jump in later when something has gotten traction. What a shame.
Start…dive in…ask forgiveness rather than permission…make mistakes (like your host did in not checking to see if he was using the right microphone). Our second Weather Insiders episode, with Brad Panovich, is coming up on Friday. Here is episode one.
