Apparently I was one day too early with yesterday’s post.
New word today from All Things D reveals that Facebook is testing a new “celebrity only” app that you can’t use.
This a slippery slope. Accommodating a single interest group on a global platform invites requests for the same treatment of every interest group. Shouldn’t Save The Whales have a special app? They should demand, and deserve, equal treatment from Facebook, right? What about the alzheimer’s community? And the Main Street Quilting Group that meets every other Thursday at the church in downtown East Overshoe, MT? Those folks donate those quilts to kids who have extended stays at the hospital across the river. Certainly they are equally as important as celebrities…yes?
Of course celebrity gossip is a much bigger industry and will encourage users to stay on Facebook a little longer, providing more “big data” that Facebook needs to convince advertisers. So, I’m anxious to see the designated Facebook Weather App that includes radar, current temperatures, warnings, and, oh yes, advertising. I wonder if that will be released before or after the one for the whales?
