Good short post from Seth Godin today.


“Why are we doing it this way?” The arrival of a new year (and for me, a new station) is a great opportunity to ask the question.

Seems like so many times the answer is, inertia. “That is the way we’ve always done it.”, “That is the way it was set-up.”

When the touch-screen arrived in the weather office at a sister station I asked, “Why?”.  (I’m not a fan of doing the weather in front of a monitor…minimizes the data, washed out, harder to see…).  I asked several people the question.  Universally the first response was silence.  Then uncomfortable silence…looking around…and then came the answer.  “CNN uses one.”

My New Year’s resolution is to ask, “Why?”  Repeatedly.  And trace the answer back to the origin.

    Why do we do a 2:45 weather hit with current conditions (that people already know) off the top, a look at tomorrow’s forecast (which they already know), followed by the 10 day forecast (which they already know)?

        …and the problem is — television news is an environment where you aren’t even allowed to ASK that question let alone experiment with possible answers. James Spann’s 10pm show is the only place I’ve heard of a non-standard weathercast? Unfortunately for those in the TV weather industry, I’m afraid that by the time the consultants start asking that question and the GMs start incorporating the answers — viewers will have long since left for the venue that already does so.

    Yes, the time delay in action and visionary thinking is troubling, Rob.

  3. I totally agree with Seth’s blog and Rob’s comments. Ask why enough is a sure fire way to annoy both consultants and station manager. Often times both of these parties fail to realize that glitz and cute effects do not make poor content good or for that matter good content better.
